What Ghana's Data Protection Act means for your school

Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) is now actively enforced: the Data Protection Commission (DPC) ended its grace period on 31 December 2025 and audits began in 2026. If your school holds pupils' and parents' data, this affects you. The good news: the work is straightforward, and most of what you need is ready.

You are the data controller

Your school decides what data is collected and why, so under Act 843 your school is the data controller and must register with the DPC. A software provider that holds the data on your behalf is a data processor. iEasySR is your processor.

What you register

On the DPC application you describe the data you hold (learner names, dates of birth, guardian contacts, health notes where kept, results and attendance), the purpose (running the school, scoring, report cards, fee billing, statutory reporting), and you disclose your processor. You also appoint an internal staff member as your data-protection supervisor.

Do it once

Register with the DPC, appoint your supervisor, attach our DPA, and renew every two years. If you need a signed copy of the agreement for your file, just ask. None of this replaces advice from a qualified adviser, but with the pack in hand, most schools can complete it in an afternoon.
